The Architect

An award-winning corporate finance advisor, founder and former managing partner of Convex Capital (2010 – 2020) and lead advisor on the sale of over £1bn of owner-managed businesses.

The story ultimately starts at the age of 10, living in a council house in a small village in Derbyshire, with a desire to do more, have more and the realisation that I had the power to change things myself.

Convincing the only newsagents in the village to give me four paper rounds was the start of a journey of learning that hard work, being polite, doing the job properly and exceeding expectations, would provide access to the opportunity that would uncover my passion.

I can fill in more of the details if we have the opportunity to chat face to face, but the highlights that I hope will give you a flavour for who I am:

  • I didn’t go to university
  • My job history includes; paperboy, pot-washer, milkman, window cleaner, chef, accountant, corporate financier and managing director
  • I was the youngest ever person to qualify as a Chartered Accountant, at the age of 20
  • I advised my first client/entrepreneur on the sale of his business, back in 1999
  • I’ve lived and breathed corporate finance, solely advising owner/managed businesses for the past 20 years
  • I was one of the two founders of Convex Capital, arguably the most successful sell-side advisory firm in the UK (2010 – 2020)
  • I’ve been the lead advisor on the sale of over 50 businesses, with a combined value of over £1bn.
  • We sold Convex to a UK plc in 2019, in a deal that valued the business at £25m
  • I work not because I need to, but because I want to. It’s not a job; it’s my passion.

I value honesty over politeness.

I have no time for people that offer advice if they haven’t walked a mile in their client’s shoes.

I strive to learn every day.

I’ll only wear a tie for weddings and funerals.

I’m obsessed with delivering exceptional advice to exceptional businesses.

I’ve met with over 1,000 business owners, and never get bored of hearing their journey.

I’m all ears. I’d love to hear your story.
